Neuropore Therapies is a local biotech company (originally founded by UCSD researchers) developing therapies for
Alzheimer's Disease, Parkinson's Disease and related neurodegenerative disorders. It is the first biopharmaceutical
company of its class utilizing innovative structure-based design technology to discover therapies for neurodegenerative
disorders.

Speaker: Diana Price, PhD, Director of Biosciences and Visiting Scholar at UCSD School of Medicine, will talk about her
career path, her company, and her perspective on the differences between academia and industry, and transitioning from
academia to industry career.

Genoptix is a part of Novartis Molecular Diagnostics (MDx), a unit within the Novartis Pharmaceuticals Division. They
focus on developing and commercializing evidence-driven tests to improve physicians' ability to optimize patient
outcomes.


Speaker: Jelveh Lameh, PhD, is the Director of BioPharma Services at Genoptix Medical Laboratory. She was previously
a group leader at ACADIA Pharmaceuticals. She has 20+ years of experience in the areas of pharmacology and drug
discovery. She received her Ph.D. in Pharmacology/Toxicology from UC Davis and was an Assistant Professor at UCSF.

Ionian is a biotechnology company with an exciting new technology for DNA and RNA amplification. Ionians' proprietary

Speaker: Mike Killoran, Senior Scientist at Ionian Technologies who recently made the transition from postdoc at Salk to
senior scientist in industry. He will share his experience about the job search process, benefits of Linkedin profile, tips on
interviewing, and his perspective on the differences in career path between academia and industry

Pathways to Independence: Winning an NIH K99/R00 grant 
The NIH K99/R00 program provides support to postdocs to facilitate transition to independence. The award will provide up to five years of support consisting of two phases. The initial phase will provide 1-2 years of mentored support for highly promising, postdoctoral scholars. This phase will be followed by up to 3 years of independent support contingent on securing an independent research position. AND non-US citizens are eligible to apply.
Professor Pamela Mellon will give an overview of the program, share experience as a reviewer, and provide valuable tips to make your application stand out. Wilson Clement and Evan Miller, recent postdoc recipients, will share their experiences preparing, submitting and receiving the award.

Understanding the campus policies and procedures will save you time and surprises.

The Basics of Science Grant Writing
Distinguished Professor of Medicine and Bioengineering Peter Wagner will explain the importance of preparation, introduce the proposal elements (abstract, specific aims, significance, design and method, etc), explain what and how to address each section, and share his experience as a grant submitter and reviewer.
